Munnar Overview

Postby MaarkMoon » Thu Jul 09, 2009 11:22 am

Munnar is a small town located in the Idukki district of Kerala. Its name is derived from the fact that the area is strategically located at the meeting point of 3 rivers. This area generally receives a cold and wet climate as it is a hill station located at 1600mts to around 1800mts. Covered by greenery owing to the tea plantations in Munnar, adventure sports facilities, scenic fauna and flora and the fact that it provides a pleasant climate almost throughout the year, makes Munnar one of the most sought after travel destinations in Kerala. A large part of Munnar is covered by tea plantations from the early British times, and was developed for the sole reason of tea cultivation by the pioneer J.D Munro and hence they are now, the producers of very high quality tea not only to Kerala and the whole of India, but also to the whole world.

Munnar Hotels
have been known for their excellent hospitality and their cozy accommodation. One can choose from staying in a tent, tree house, villas etc. or a normal room all outfitted with luxurious amenities to make any visitors comfortable as well as give them a memorable experience to remember. As it is home to the highest peak in South India called ‘Anamudi’, trekking and picnicking are encouraged in Munnar. Other tourist activities include plantation tours, wild life tours, tea factory tours, boating, fishing, para-gliding, cycling, etc. A visit to the Tea Museum is always advised as the museum holds artifacts and information about tea, the methods and equipment used to produce tea in the British times and also a lot of facts and figures about Munnar’s tea estates and coffee plantations. Another must-see in Munnar is the CSI church built by the British in 1910. This stone church holds a lot of stained glass work and it is a haven for any tourist owing to its peaceful, calm, serene ambience.

Everyone in Munnar is either employed in the tea industry or the tourism industry as both these industries are the major contributors to Munnar’s economy.

Munnar is located on the eastern side of Indian state of Kerala. Munnar is a beautiful hill station of south India located only 130 km from Kochi (Cochin), one of the India's major port towns, and 140 km from Kottayam.

Mountains, landscapes, beautiful tea plantation across the hillsides, nature's beautiful colours, cultural wealth and architectural diversity of the city are just some of the reasons to visit Munnar.

Munnar is one of the top tea production centers of India. Interestingly, it is also one of the highest locations in the world where tea is grown. Greenery of these tea plantations makes Munnar nature-lover's paradise. Low-riding clouds on these green tea plantations bring this paradise on earth.
Outdoor retreats and adventure sports are the main activities. Nature treks, trails, lakes, forests and reservoir offer the perfect outdoor trip for groups and families. Boating, paragliding, cycling, wildlife fairs, elephant rides, Helicopter flights are some other activities for families.

Munnar is not famous for any particular food but all common tastes of India are available here. Munnar has something to offer to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.

Shopping will not take time here. There are no such shopping complexes here. Small local markets sell mostly fresh food or local handicraft.

The weather and climate remains pleasant and cool throughout the year. Even during the summer months, the temperature seldom goes beyond 20º C.. Therefore, when you travel to Munnar during summer months you will need to carry some light woolen clothes for protection against the cold weather. During winters, the weather and climate of Munnar becomes too cold and sometimes the temperature goes below 0º C.

Best of Munnar

The neelakurinji, a blue flower which blooms only every twelve years, is found in this region. It bloomed last in December 2006. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India, Anamudi, at 2695 m.

* Walk in the Clouds - Trek to your heart's content while the clouds slowly descend upon you.

* Rock Climbing and Rappelling - Munnar has a steep rock face about 100ft.

* The Christ Church, in Old Munnar.visit here
